Pickleball in Northborough, Massachusetts

Northborough has six dedicated outdoor courts at Ellsworth McAfee Park and one of the strongest town recreation programs in the area. Adults can choose lessons at three levels, women's ladder play, and mixed 3.0 to 3.5 competition. A junior academy gives middle school players a local entry point. Public court time remains useful for casual groups and visitors outside scheduled programs.

Ellsworth McAfee Park

Ellsworth McAfee Park is at 363 South Street on Route 135. Its six outdoor courts are dedicated to pickleball. Permanent lines and nets remove the need for portable equipment. The park also has parking, a pavilion, gazebo, walking track, basketball and volleyball courts, athletic fields, a skate park, and bocce courts.

Town lessons and leagues reserve recurring blocks on the pickleball courts. Public play fits around those activities and private park reservations. The six court layout is large enough for several foursomes and makes McAfee the best local choice for outdoor games.

Nearby indoor play

Ace Pickleball Club in Westborough is at 180 Milk Street, a short drive from Northborough. It offers indoor open play throughout member hours. Members and their guests use skill designated courts and a paddle stack rotation. The club is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Lessons and beginner play

Northborough Recreation lessons run at Ellsworth McAfee Park for adults age 18 and older. The fall 2026 session meets on Sundays from September 13 through October 18. Intermediate players train from 9 to 10 a.m. Advanced beginners meet from 10 to 11 a.m. Beginners meet from 11 a.m. to noon. Each six week class costs $125 for residents and nonresidents.

The beginner course covers rules, forehands, backhands, dinks, drops, serves, returns, court position, and movement to the non volley zone. Advanced beginner instruction targets the move from a 2.5 to a 3.0 level. Intermediate instruction focuses on consistency, advanced strokes, and strategy. PPR certified coach Suzanne Cox teaches the program.

The Junior Pickleball Academy serves students in grades 7 through 9 on Tuesday afternoons. Adult beginners have a clear path from the Sunday class into public games. Additional instructors appear in the Coaches section.

Leagues and organized play

Northborough Recreation runs several level based programs at McAfee. The women's 3.5 ladder meets Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. The format moves players according to results and suits women who already compete comfortably at the published level.

The mixed gender 3.0 to 3.5 Up and Down the River program meets Thursday evenings. Players move among courts through the session, which creates changing matchups and level matched competition. Fall 2026 play begins September 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. These programs require Recreation registration and take priority over public use during their court blocks.

Visiting Northborough

Ellsworth McAfee Park is the best choice for a visitor with a partner or foursome. The dedicated nets allow a group to play without hauling court equipment. Weekday evening and weekend morning leagues can occupy part of the complex. Midday public time is often a better fit for an unscheduled match.

Town lessons charge the same published fee to residents and nonresidents, so a visitor staying through a full session can join without a local price penalty. A solo short term visitor has no guaranteed municipal drop in program. Ace Pickleball Club in Westborough works for players visiting with a member. Its all day open play uses skill designated courts.
